Is AI replacing BPO?

No, but it is replacing the part of BPO that was priced per person. AI agents now handle much of the repetitive contact and back-office work that providers billed by the seat or the hour. The providers still growing are the ones running AI inside their own delivery and selling the outcome, with people kept on the exceptions, the judgement calls and the client relationship.

What AI is taking over

The work that moves first is work with a known answer and a high volume, where the cost was always the number of people needed to keep up:

  • Tier-1 contact: order status, account changes, appointment changes, password resets.
  • Document intake: reading invoices, claims and forms, then keying what they say into a system.
  • Follow-up: reminders, missing-information requests, payment chasers.
  • Quality checks: scoring every interaction instead of sampling a few per agent each month.

What it isn't taking over

Exceptions, regulated conversations, complaints and anything where a wrong answer costs money or trust still need a person, and a client still wants someone accountable when it goes wrong. An AI agent that pauses before a consequential action and hands the case over with its reasoning attached is how that line is held in practice, rather than in a policy document.

Is outsourcing a dying concept?

No. The buyer's need, someone accountable for an outcome they don't want to run themselves, hasn't changed. What is dying is the pricing: a per-seat contract asks the client to pay for headcount that AI has made unnecessary, and clients increasingly know it. Providers are moving to per-outcome and per-resolution pricing, where running AI efficiently is the provider's margin rather than the client's discount.

What this means if you run a BPO

The risk isn't that AI replaces you. It's that a client deploys AI themselves and keeps only the exceptions with you, at a fraction of the contract. Running AI inside your own delivery, per client, with each client's rules and an audit trail you can show them, keeps the whole contract with you. That is what AgentConnect is built for. LYRIQ is a member of IBPAP, the Philippines' IT and business process association, and works with providers on the delivery side.
